LOCATION: Hackensack River, NJ
TROUT FISHING TRIP
Air Temp: average 49 degrees
Water Temp: average 42.8
Fish caught: Rainbow & Brown Trout
Water Quality: very cloudy, slow moving during tide changes, brackish water.
Lures: no live bait was used, all fish were caught and released on artificial bait... 1/4oz gold colored metal lure
Rods: 6 1/2 to 7 foot medium light.
Reels: Spinners and baitcasters
Line: 6 lb mono, and 10 lb braid with fluorocarbon leader
We decided to do some "urban" fishihng today on the Hackensack River in Riveredge, NJ. This is a northerly location for this river that narrows dramatically as it meanders further north. In the section we were on the water depth at high tide is 8 to 10 ft in the middle, and from 1 to 2 ft on both banks. At low tide you will be hard pressed to walk or retrieve a boat as the bottom is very muddy.
We initially tried going for resident Stripe Bass on this section of the river but came up short... wishful thinking on our part. But we made the best of it knowing that more success was likely due to this being New Jersey's opening day for Trout!
In case you were wondering.. the water up there is brackish, more fresh then salty actually, so Trout and resident Stripers can survive.
3 GUYS tried several different lures (metal / plastics) and tackle combinations on this trip to see what worked the best. And after many, many casts we learned that spinning gear and a small 1/4 oz gold metal lure was the most productive.
We each used the same exact lure but with one difference ... the writer of this article was the only one that attached the LINE DANCER to his rod!
Thlis little jewel was instrumental in producing 8 caught trout, and 3 losses... 11 fish total in just 2 hours of mid day fishing!! Each of us was within striking distance of each other on the same side of the river bank and so I am confident in saying that the LINE DANCER was a KEY factor in my catching most of the fish on this trip!!
The added action imparted by this tool, and a slow retrieve ,made the difference between a good day and an OUTSTANDING day!
We are looking forward to trying the Line Danceragain with plastics and other hard baits in our coming Bass fishing trips.
